1.  Introduction

Here are statistics for various hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.

2.  Completions

As of 2010-08-28 to 2010-08-29 (Timber Lake, Mt Ida, Chief Cheley Pk, Pt 12820, Cracktop, Mt Julian, Terra Tomah Mtn), here are my completions:

50/129 days (38.8%).
81/160 peaks (50.6%).
73/187 non-peak destinations (39.0%).
13/24 backcountry camping nights (54.2%).

3.  Column meanings

Here's an explanation of the columns:

Profile

The vertical unit is feet. The horizontal unit at the top of a profile is estimated time in hours. The horizontal unit at the bottom of a profile is miles.

The trail color represents the class of that portion of the trail.

LOE

LOE stands for Level of Effort.  It is a unit developed by me that helps describe the overall level of effort required to complete a hike.

The level of effort of walking one flat class 1 mile is 1.0.  So if the level of effort of a trail is 18.0, then it is approximately the same level of effort as walking 18 flat class 1 miles.

Time

This is the estimated time for hiking the given profile with a small day pack.  Add 3 minutes per LOE if wearing an overnight backpack.  Add 8 minutes per LOE if snowshoeing or hiking in snow.

4.1  Note about trails to the junction of Loch Vale Trail and Glacier Gorge Trail

There are many routes to the junction of Loch Vale Trail and Glacier Gorge Trail.  I primarily use the Glacier Gorge TH via Alberta Falls for profiles that go past this junction.  However, if the Glacier Gorge TH parking is full, one can travel to this junction from Bear Lake as well.   Additionally, if one does not wish to visit Alberta Falls, there is a Fire Trail shortcut.  The following table compares the difficulty for the various trails to and from the junction.

Here is a quote about the Fire Trail shortcut from The Sharkstooth page on SummitPost.com: "Most climbers use an unmarked trail to reach [the trail junction].  It cuts 15-20 minutes off the hike and bypasses Alberta Falls and the switchbacks above it.  The trail begins immediately after the fourth bridge, slightly more than 0.3 miles from the new trailhead.  (The third bridge is a small, single log affair, I am counting that.)  After crossing the fourth bridge, turn right and make your way up the slope.  The path is faint at first but soon develops into a full-fledged, well-maintained trail.  It joins up with the main trail 100 feet below the junction."
